On the 3rd day of Christmas...I decided to attempt to make gingerbread men!
I've never tried to make gingerbread before and I usually cheat and buy the ready made gingerbread houses but this year we bought a fairytale cottage mould from Lakeland and some gingerbread man cutters and stamps. As I wanted to make some for Christmas day for the kiddy winks in the family I thought I would do a test run - and its a good job I did too, gingerbread is hard!
WHAT YOU NEED:
180g butter
125g brown sugar
300g golden syrup
500g flour
1tsp ground ginger
1/2tsp bicarbonate of soda
WHAT TO DO
- Pre-heat oven to 170*C
- Melt butter in a large pan over a low heat and add to bowl. Add the sugar and syrup and stir together.
- Add the remaining ingredients and mix until you have a thick dough. If consistency is still sticky add additional flour.
- Flour the surface and tip dough onto it. Roll out to about half an inch thick.
- Cut with cutters and place on to baking tray.
- Bake for 20 minutes until golden and place on a cooling rack.
- Add icing and smarties and eat :)
The first batch were a little bit browner than expected - see the arm and leg on the left! oops! - but the rest were absolutely yummy!
Will you be baking some Christmassy treats this year?
These look so cute, I'm baking some gingerbread men today!
